Microbe world

“Quite interesting! (and pretty gross) so thumbs up!”

Year 5 pupil
Suitability: Primary (KS2)

Rationale

Bring micro-organisms to life with this simple activity. Sherrington helped discover the cause of Cholera. His first paper suggested another cause, but in his second paper he described bacteria.

Talk about ‘good’ and ‘bad’ micro-organisms – what can they do to help us? How is cholera caught? How can we prevent and treat infections?

Get inspired by the microscopic world with images of micro-organisms Together as a class create a collage of a drop of water teeming with micro-organisms.

Each pupil made a drawing and we used shades of blue to represent stains in microscopy used to pick out the detail within.

This a great activity for the imagination and visually looks beautiful. Everyone can contribute!

“I added a speck to the clear water just before leaving the laboratory late in the summer afternoon. Next afternoon, to my extreme astonishment the whole column of water in one jar was faintly opalescent. I microscoped a drop. It teemed with myriads of cholera germs, the progeny of my speck the day before”

Sir Charles Scott Sherrington from ‘Man on his Nature’ (1940)
