‘Man looking at himself’– A-level pupils

“When I see pictures of muscles I don’t see it as science, I see it as a person – it’s refreshing”

A-level pupil
Suitability: KS2, KS3, KS4, A Level

Rationale

Sherrington studied how the central nervous system co-ordinates our movements.

Activity

Look at illustrations of the body and create a unique muscle/nerve self-portrait.

This activity allows pupils to think about themselves.

For primary schools – pupils drew around the body and painted in nerves and muscles. For secondary schools – pupils often focused on smaller more detailed pieces of work.

“I have not awareness of the muscles as such at all. Yet I execute the movement rightly and without difficulty”

Sir Charles Scott Sherrington from ‘Man on his Nature’ (1940)
