Sir Charles Scott Sherrington wrote a remarkable book in his 80s entitled on ‘Man on his Nature’. There are so many themes which he explored from consciousness to our empathy. In his book Sherrington wrote about the body in visually evocative ways before imaging the body, and most famously described the brain as ‘an enchanted loom’.
We include a selection of quotes (Sherringtons quotes) which can help provoke thought on the wonder of life, and to bring cell biology to life. These quotes can be used for discussion and to provoke artwork and poetry – see Sherrington’s Words activity.

“Each of us at the outset of his/her individual life story is microscopic.”

“We dismiss wonder commonly with childhood. Much later we may return. Then the whole world becomes wonderful.”

“the brain is waking and with it the mind is returning. It is as if the Milky Way entered upon some cosmic dance. Swiftly the head-mass becomes an enchanted loom where millions of flashing shuttles weave a dissolving pattern, always a meaningful pattern”

“All man can do is move things.”

Sir Charles Sherrington from ‘Man on his Nature’ (1940)
