Grünbaum notes that his detection device incorporates an 'iris diaphram' to regulate the size of the field of light on the retina, and an 'artificial pupil' which ensures 'the correct position of the observer's eye' (O.F.F. Sherrington notes that 'In making the observations the observer in the dark room... wore artificial pupils between his eye and the prisms. The diameter of the artificial pupils was sometimes 3, sometimes 4mm... pupils were carried in a Landolt frame capable of both vertical and horizontal and also of angular adjustments.' (30)
