Created D.K.M. Chalmers, 'Memorandum: Importation of Monkeys', 15th August, 1940 (FD 1/6243).
15 Aug 1940
Description:'Importation of Monkeys.
I interviewed Miss Edwards, the Manageress of Mesrs. Chapmans... She undertook to place the matter before her directors. Apart from restriction of importation, she explained that the war risk premiums would add greatly to the cost of the animals, and that her firm could not undertake to import less than 300-400 monkeys at a time. I said that I would let he know what our immediate requirements would be... Normally there is a restriction on the exportation of monkeys from India between October and March: it is not known whether this restriction is still in force.'

24 Apr 1940
Description:'Dr. Thomson.
Supplies of Monkeys.
The supply of experimental monkeys in this country is now about exhausted. Apart from the ordinary use to which these animals are put, their lack may seriously hamper the work sponsored by the Brain Injuries Committee.
I have been in communication with Chapman's - the firm which normally supplies monkeys to the Institute [National Institute of Medical Research?] - and have been informed that no further importations will be sanctioned by the Board of Trade during the war.
