Section through one of the folia of the cerebellum, stained with iron haematoxylin and neutral red. Both the cells and the medullated fibres are stained. A central core of white matter (i.e. medullated fibres) is seen extending up the folium.  From this central core, fibres run out into the granular layer of the cortex, forming an intricate plexus. The molecular layer is practically devoid of medullated fibres (except for a sparse thin stratum in immediate relation with the Purkinje cells). On the other hand (as the next section shows), the molecular layer has many non medullated fibres.

In this section the iron haematoxylin has stained the red corpuscles in the capillary vessels a dense black. Notice how much more vascular the granular layer appears to be than the molecular layer.
