Species: monkey
Part of Body: brain, cerebral cortex
Number of Sections: 1
Stained with: carmine gelatin
Description

Section of a monkey's brain injected with carmine gelatin. Under the microscope is seen a part of the cerebral cortex. Note the numerous small cortical arteries (terminal branches of the anterior, middle and posterior cerebral arteries) which penetrate the cortex, entering the latter perpendicularly. So numerous are these small cortical vessels that the interruption of one by a clot or embolus would lead to no perceptible defect. Within the cortex, the vessels form a dense network of capillaries.
