Coronal section of one cerebral hemisphere. Note the relative positions of the anterior, medial and ventral nuclei of the thalamus. Above the ventral nucleus (but not sharply demarcated from it) is the lateral nucleus. The body of the lateral ventricle is roofed by the corpus callosum, and its floor is formed laterally by the caudate nucleus and medially by the dorsal surface of the thalamus. Notice the internal capsule (between the caudate nucleus and thalamus medially and the lentiform nucleus laterally) extending down in continuity with the cerebral peduncle. The lentiform nucleus is clearly subdivided into its two elements, putamen (Put) and globus pallidus (G). In the descending horn of the lateral ventricle the inrolling of the cortex to form the hippocampus is very evident.
