Description:'The Lok Sabha on Friday rejected a resolution suggesting the appointment of a parliamentary committee to examine the question of export of monkeys.
The resolution had been proposed by Mr Assar (Jana Sangh) as a substitute for one tabled by Mr Mohan Swarup (PSP) seeking a ban on the export of monkeys.
During the 90-minute debate on Mr Swarup's resolution, Mr Khadiwala (C) said the export of monkeys was against "our tradition of loving animals".
Mr Achal Singh, Mr Khadiwala and Mrs Sahodra Bai (all C0 and Mr M.B. Thakore (Ind) also supported the motion.
Mr V.P. Nayar (Com), opposing the motion, said that by allowing the export of monkeys India was helping in the production of valuable drugs to prevent infantile paralysis.
Others who opposed the resolution included Mr Easwara Iyer (Ind) and Mr Ranbir Singh Choudhuri and Mr Ramji Verama (both C).
Mr N. Kanungo, Minister of Commerce, opposed both resolutions. He said the export of monkeys was banned briefly during 1955 but had to be revised "in the interests of scientific progress and eradication of disease in the world".
The House rejected the substitute motion and then agreed to the withdrawal of the original resolution - PTI.'
