Sent from Edward Nettleship
22 Mar 1907
Description:
‘Dear Pearson,
A side issue. In connexion with the piebald negroes I should like to get at information about the colour of the parents of piebald horses or any other animals that are only occasionally piebald (by piebald I mean white with large dark areas or dark with large white areas). Can you refer me to any publications or person? I find nothing in Darwin.
Somebody who has studied Breeders’ records might know & you & others have done so?
At least one of the piebald children was the product of black father x white mother; & though in the others both parents are said to have been black the cases all occurred in children of slaves; i.e. I have found none recorded in children of Africans who had not left Africa, though ordinary albinos of course occur there.
What about piebald mice?
Yrs sincerely
E. Nettleship.
I daresay Bateson cd. give me a clue if you cannot; but I should have to tell him why I was asking.’
