Description:
‘Dear Pearson,
Chinese albinos.
Mr Thos. D. Begg[?] (missionary) has been 22 years in China from 1888 to 1895 he saw 12 Chinese albinos near Whei-Chao in NGan-whi province where there are said to be 20 albinos. It is a mountainous & poorly populated district. He remembers the red eyes; the yellowish hair & that freckles were common (he doesn’t remember Nystagmus). He says albinos are looked down on & the Chinese think that albinos have foreign blood in them. At Whei-chow Mr Begg believes that there is an intermixture of race or blood.
Mr Begg is leaving now for Shanghai his present headquarters. There is a female typical specimen of albino 2 minutes from his house, he thinks he will easily get a photo. I have armed him also with several schedules which he thinks he can make use of.
Note from Dr Turner about Basutos sent in separate envelope this morning.
Yours sincerely,
C.H. Usher.’
