Description:
‘... [detailed notes on dogs:]...
II.2 (Mairi bhan) & II.5 (Jan ban)... vision evidently defective, occasionally run against things; nose and ears are used more than eyes...
III.5, to 10, born 12.12.09. one died 14.12.09 hairs of body white, iris grey, pupils grey, neither black nor red. Another of 15/12/09, hairs all pure white, iris grey, some red in pupil (of course in these two lids had to be separated to expose eyes). Piece of skin from spectacle mark region had no pigment microscopically. A third pup, with hernia, not thriving so killed 27.2.10, coat ‘white’, pupil red, fundus pale, on oph. “exam” red reflex thro’ iris on 7.1.10 on parts of eye with pigment are epiblastic layers of iris & ciliary body. A few pigment granules present in some of the hairs (this I should say requires confirmation as my experience of it is too limited). Of the three living pups (22.6.11) of litter III. 5 to 10, coat is light, where colour is present it is brownish, head & back is darkest in all-spectacle mark in all of them; pupil red; iris blue-gray. The brown on coats is very pale even on darkest part. Donal ban (III.6) on 10.6.10 “a big dog with curly hair round neck” posterior to this his back is light fawn colour so is top of head”. [sic re: quotation marks] Speaking generally the whole sibship III.5. to 10 closely resembled the parents (II, 2 & II, 5).
... [similar descriptions for Spook x Donal ban litter of 5 – apparently all died as microcopic analysis of eyes included; descriptions of Olga, Donal dhu, Dugald dhu, Ian dhu, Mairi dhu]...
These notes may be more or less than you asked for, if the latter please say as there are fuller notes of some of the dogs. Skins of dead ones are kept. Two families expected soon.
Yours sincerely,
C.H. Usher.’
