Description:
‘Dear Pearson,
I have measured 16 dogs their names & the measurements are on separate sheet. Another sheet shows in tree form the relationships of the dogs. The full sibships are not given. No doubt you have taken them at hand. There was no great difficulty in making the measurements, though they are certainly rough.
You will observe that the transverse jaw measurement has been omitted. How do you make it? External to the skin or not? Again you say that it is to be made opposite the 3rd molar of upper jaw. In the book I looked up it gives only 2 molars in upper jaw for the permanent teeth & 4[th] pre-molar, but for the milk teeth there are 4 molars. I suppose that the point to be taken is the 3rd pre-molar in the adult dog & the 3rd molar in the pups? I should say that the measurement will be very difficult. Would calipers not be better. I used compasses for the nose measurement.
I don’t suppose there was any point in transferring the measurements to M.M.[?] The Aberdeen dogs can be got at any time. The Edinburgh ones may have to wait a little. I shall keep the measure until I hear from you.
Yrs sincerely,
C.H. Usher.’
