Sent from Charles Howard Usher
4 Apr 1913
Description:
‘Dear Pearson,
In case you are unable to read the figures on a postcard sent in a hurry this morning. Here they are again.
Fraoch dhu
Head length 5.29”
Head breadth 3.67”
Nasal length 2.2”
Jaw breadth 2.3”
It would not have been satisfactory to have had the measurements repeated by another person so I made a dash to Edinburgh & am very glad that I went - the stupid mistake evidently was mistaking the long stroke of the half inch for that of an inch. That leaves a difference of a little more than 1/10th inch between the two measurements when ½” is subtracted from the first measurement. The difference of 1/10th inch is not to be wondered at for I believe that it would be difficult to get the same figure for the nasal length on 2 consecutive measurements owing to the gradual blending of nose with head, that is to say, there is not a definite little notch to be felt as in the other dogs at the root of their nose.
Yours sincerely,
C.H. Usher.’
