Description:
‘My dear Pearson,
I enclose a few memoranda on the new Plates & return the proofs herewith. It is difficult for me to believe that 12-13 are from the same person but no doubt you have satisfied yourself on this point.
About the Dog matings for the future – I have made out the accompanying rough pedigree of the individuals we are most concerned with showing what the crosses have been up to now, & what are arranged or intended for the next year or so.
1st as to Tong 1st (your Tong);- She has had 6 litters, 4 of them by 3 different coloured dogs, giving all coloured offspring; and 2 litters by an albino (Jack) giving 8 puppies (3 & 5) all albino.
Next Tong (g) x Jack gives all (3) puppies albinos. Next the albino sibs (h), offspring of Jack & Tong give all albinos.
Then Jack & Jill & their 3 coloured sibs. & spook of Westbury & her 2 coloured sibs. are offspring of two different pairs of coloured dogs.
And the incomplete albino c, d, e, & Wang are offspring of Jack & Jill who themselves had coloured parents; & issue of Albino f. ♀ x Minora[?], (coloured ♂) are all coloured.
Subject to any criticism from you I think we shall get the black pug crosses made by Mrs Dew-Smith & Usher respectively. I think we should now work as nearly as possible for pure albinos by getting so much Tong blood as we can & as pure white as we can.
I therefore suggest that the next cross for Tong wd. properly be with one of her own albino sons e.g. Ian Ban (one of Usher’s) or whichever is whitest of Wee Ling or Wee Choo – Usher’s is too far off, so if you agree it will mean waiting till Wee Choo or Wee Ling is old enough i.e. missing another term. Or we might put her to Jack again this time & to Wee L. next autumn.
Then I shd. like to try my very white Spook with one of Tong(1st)’s sons when both are old enough.
These will give us as near as we can get to pure strain I should think.
It is already clear that O x O may produce a proportion of albs. offspring; that • x • will not always produce all pure albs. Offspring; & that • x O give all coloured.
Would you mind having a copy of the enclosed [genealogy chart?] made & returning the original? We shall then both know where we are & can refer to individuals by letter &c. in dealing with future breedings.
I am probably going away for a few days next Friday or Sat. (Mch. 4 or 5) but that will not interfere with Tong coming here to be served & staying until all is completely over; my crippled [sic] man looks after dogs, confinements & matings & she can be conveniently kept isolated in a disused & enclosed house-box in stable where we always put the bitches for this purpose.
Later in the week I will write with instructions so that you can let man here know what train & what day you send her & he will meet her at Haslemere station.
