‘Dearest Wife,
I am so vexed to hear of Helga & you sitting up to look after Megan. It is not possible for you to do that, and it is fatal for Helga’s work. Personally I do not think that the life of Megan depends on 2-hourly feedings. She is sure to have a bad time after what has happened, but I do not think she was in an expiring condition & her desire not to eat was to a certain extent self-protective. Please do not do more than go in if you wake up at night. It seems to me that the Ferdinands rather overdid it. I think you will find that as soon as she gets over her milk troubles she will feed of her own accord & that until she does, feeding every 6 hrs or so is enough. Of course I write this for your sakes, anxious as I am that for Saturday’s sake Megan may survive. I am indeed grateful for all Helga & you have done. I am so tired that I hardly know how to write this, and have had to keep in my chair most of today. Unless I feel less leg weary, I believe it will be better not to come to Coldharbour this week end as I shall be too tired to move. The heat here is very great and things do not go properly forward at the Laboratory, as they have taken all the contractors men off this week for the sculpture studios, so that we cannot get our cases reinstated or painted, but are more & more encamped on the floors in hopeless muddle. We hope to finish publications tomorrow & start skulls. But we shall hardly be out for another ten days & it will take two months more to get into relative order! I am too old to start anew like this. Mr Soper has bad haemorrhoids but the operation has been postponed. The foodcards have come tonight & I forward Helga’s & yours. I suppose we continue with the Mason, Whiteley (for Sugar) & the Express. Will you & Helga sign where I have put crosses at A, B, C at bottom, nowhere else. I am sending Egan’s & Sigrid’s for signature & will when returned all four to me, get them signed by Express & Mason.
