Description:
'Every available member of Bootle fire brigade was called out and every machine was brought into use on Sunday, April 24, to fight one of the most spectacular blazes in the town in recent years, which badly damaged the works of Stamina Foods Ltd., in Princes Street.
The outbreak was discovered by a 10-year-old girl, Mary McNally, while she was playing near her home, and as soon as Chief Officer Collins saw the pall of smoke over the neighbourhood he called out all reserves. As the officer stepped from the engine he was struck by a falling slate, which dented his helmet but caused no injury.
When the brigade arrived the main buildings were a mass of flames, and minor explosions were showering slates and dog food over a wide area.
Water was pumped from the canal, and men worked from an 85ft. turntable pumping water into the blaze.
Firemen forced their way to the seat of the blaze and got it under control within an hour.
We understand that arrangements have been made to carry on the trade, and all outstanding orders, by the time this appears in print, should have been fulfilled.’
