'I acknowledge, with many thanks, the receipt of your very kind gift of the Annals of the Royal Society Club, by Sir. Archibald Geike... it is full of interesting particulars about individuals, for instance, Henry Cavendish, which one cannot get anywhere else. I called the attention of the Duke of Devonshire, when he was here as Governor-General, to what the Annals said about Cavendish, and he told me a number of very interesting anecdotes about him.'
