‘Dear Nettleship,
Many thanks for the hair, but I think, to make anything of it we ought to have a few hairs from the definitely coloured part. The combings – superficially regarded – don’t seem to contain any of the coloured hair.
As usual I am well muddled about the Pekinese – my wife says Lord John Hay is our Miss Taylor’s uncle, and no doubt I have heard say that her uncle, not her father, got the dogs. I send Compton and you will see his account p. 261.
The photos are the best part of that work.
